Merino Wool Inspires Fall ’08 CollectionsLong admired by designers for its versatility and natural drape, Merino wool continues to inspire the fashion industry and appeared in the collections of a number of top American designers at the recent Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in New York. In a season that marked a true return to sophisticated silhouettes and structured tailoring, designs made with wool fabrics truly stood out. From the most established and classic ready-to-wear designers, to the most buzzed about contemporary labels to emerging fashion upstarts, Merino wool played a key role on a variety of Fall 2008 runways. Carolina Herrera’s collection, always the epitome of uptown sophistication, included wool capes and coats among its aristocratic, British inspired looks. Fashion darlings Proenza Schouler delivered heavy wool coats and trousers in their eclectic collection. Always feminine and fun, Rebecca Taylor updated the classic rugged shearling coat by cropping it short and pairing it with ultra girly polka dot wool. Critical favorite Phillip Lim showed increased maturity in his Fall 2008 3.1 Phillip Lim collection, with a subtly sexy line in rich fabrics such as heavy wool and plush velvet. Donna Karan’s DKNYcollection showcased luxe looks for the younger set, including 60s-inspired empire dressed and mini skirts in jacquard fabrics and wool knits. ![]() Rebecca Taylor ![]() Michael Angel ![]() Donna Karan ![]() Michael Angel The collection of Australian Jayson Brundson focused on the silhouette, with elegant structures, intricate ribbon detail and fitted bodices alongside the designer’s signature flowing evening gowns. His use of Australian Merino wool was innovation at it’s finest. Wool fabrics coated to provide a wet sheen were the base of elegant ball-gowns and evening dresses, while woven wools with thread patterns provided a strong base for structured dresses and capes. Another Australian, Michael Angel, showcased exquisitely crafted coats and daring dresses in colors ranging from classic ivory and black to red, purple and blue prints. Wool coats, printed tricot leggings and silk chiffon dresses highlighted the show with intricate neck and shoulder details making each look special. “Merino is so versatile, I was able to use it in really inventive ways to create a number of the unique looks that were shown on the runway,” said Michael Angel. “Working with such a luxurious and wearable natural fibre allows me to experiment with different silhouettes and styles that will continue to surprise and delight customers each season.” |
